Robbie Robinson looking for the offload for Chiefs

Scorer: Robbie Robinson

The Chiefs returned from their bye week with a comprehensive 30-13 victory over the Waratahs at Waikato Stadium in Hamilton on Saturday.

Dave Rennie's charges now move provisionally top of the overall standings after replacing the Highlanders courtesy of scores from Robbie Robinson, Sona Taumalolo and Liam Messam.

It was loosehead prop Taumalolo's fourth try in five matches and fly-half Aaron Cruden kicked six goals from six in the workmanlike performance.

The result, which will hurt the Waratahs after their strong start to proceedings, sees the Australians fail to back up last week's victory over the Sharks.

The Sydney side are now firmly rooted to third position in their conference after suffering four defeats in their opening six fixtures in 2012.

As mentioned, Michael Foley's side had started strongly and they in fact crossed for the first try of the match through winger Tom Kingston after only five minutes. Scrum-half Brendan McKibbin, again preferred to Sarel Pretorius, kicked to make it 0-7.

But then the in-form Robinson went in after good initial work from the busy Tim Nanai-Williams, which led to Cruden sending over the leveller to make it 7-7 with 11 played.

McKibbin and Cruden then traded penalties before the half-hour and that looked to be how things would stay going into the break until the New Zealander added a further three points that handed the hosts an advantage. It was a fair reflection of how things had played out.

And things got a whole lot better for the Chiefs upon the turnaround when their top try-scorer of the Super Rugby season thus far, Taumalolo, scored three minutes after the break. That try arrived thanks to a chip that found centre Richard Kahui who fed his prop on the right.

McKibbin kicked his last goal in the 48th minute, cutting the lead to 20-13, but that was their last score as Cruden sent over his fifth shot and then converted Messam's 67th-minute try.

The scorers:

For Chiefs:
Tries: Robinson, Taumalolo, Messam
Con: Cruden 3
Pen: Cruden 3

Try: Kingston
Con: McKibbin
Pen: McKibbin 2

Bringbackruck,

I suspect you're right but it's god to see there are promising players starting to come through.. Tameifuna, Cane and Retallick, all U20 players last year.

Great name by the way

@kiwlad yes very scary indeed extremely scary.

@BringBackRuck you make a valid point but I suppose the Chiefs supporters who put up with years of Foster now departed and have listened to the gloating of other fans such as the Reds, and Bulls who have won Super Rugby and of course the other failures the Waratahs want to have their moment in the sun. Yes what you say should be noted and it will remain to see what will come to pass.

@wallaroo Im sorry for you as your comments are always well thought out and are non offensive when you disagree. Forgive me but my comments come from a number of years ago when I had to deal with the Waratahs administrators and have held them in contempt ever since.

The Chiefs are doing this without a decent forward pack, and are living with surprisingly little possession and territory, which is possible - at this level at this stage of the competition. They do have some damaging individual runners, again, at this level, but I still feel people are being quick too quick to over-rate them. We will see how they go when they get to the sharp end of the season when the play gets tighter. I suspect they will fade.

Not a lot has been said about the Chiefs improving fortunes, now that Foster has departed.

Scary when you look at where he has gone

The poser's problems started when they scored a very good first try - the all stood back and said "Jeez we really are great". end of story.

As a Chiefs fan, I'm loving this season!

Don't fret Wallaroo - one of the plus's from last night was the 'Tahs scrum. First time in a very long time that any Aussie team (national side included) has looked so good up front. And what was Foley thinking taking off Palu????

Wallaroo says...

@Ramage I'm a Tahs supporter, please don't rub salt into the wound lol. Seriously though mate our press in Australia must be the most one eyed and uninformed in the world, very rarely do they get anything right.

Tahs need to step up.

Ramage says...

Isn't it great watching the Tahs get beaten again and again after the Sydney press once more had them as favourites to win the competition. Couldnt happen to a nicer bunch. I've heard they have a new team song "Why are we always the Bridesmaids and never the blushing Bride." This game made my day.
