Rampant: Reds try-scorer Radike Samo on the charge

The Reds made it six Super Rugby victories on the trot after beating the Bulls 39-30 at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

Not since 1996 have the Queenslanders achieved such a feat, as the home side ran in six tries to bank a bonus point win over the defending champions who have now suffered back-to-back defeats.

Reds full-back Luke Morahan bagged a brace in a pulsating game of rugby that saw both sides throw everything but the kitchen sink at one another.

It was a big improvement from the visitors after last week's nightmare result against the Crusaders, and managed three tries of their own. But the Reds were more creative and more clinical than the Bulls who never gave up.

Quade Cooper was immense at fly-half for the Reds, carving up the Bulls defence and drawing gasps of amazement with his bold and brilliant passing game. The only error came from his wayward goal-kicking compared to opposite number Morne Steyn who put on a brilliant performance with the boot.

It was Steyn that opened the scoring with a pinpoint-accurate 50m penalty, but the hosts hit back through a Cooper try after the Reds magician threw a dummy and strolled over untouched under the posts.

Steyn reduced the margin to one point thanks to another long-distance penalty shot, but Cooper dug deep into his bag of tricks and put over a cheeky drop-goal to give his team a 10-6 lead.

Reds flanker Radike Samo then crossed over for a converted try before the break to set up what seemed like a handy 17-6 half-time lead in the 78th minute. But the Bulls hit back straight away thanks to wing Bjorn Basson who caught the Reds napping after flying through to collect their restart and raced in for a splendid solo try.

Steyn converted and at 17-13, the Bulls were still very much in with a shout.

The Bok pivot missed another long-range chance to close within a point and then the Reds switched back on with a try from the top-shelf to Morahan.

Given quick ball from a scrum near half-way, Cooper hit the speedster with a pin-point cut-out pass and Morahan raced 40m untouched for a 22-13 lead.

Reds wing Rod Davies was later pinged for a supposed high tackle on Francois Hougaard, and the Bulls clawed to within six points with 30 minutes left to play on the back of another 50m effort from Steyn.

However, any thoughts of a Bulls comeback was cancelled out after Morahan was celebrating his brace in the 59th minute to secure the four-try bonus point.

The Bulls' chances really took a turn for the worst when a turnover allowed Digby Ioane to toe the ball downfield, win the race, and leap over the try-line, before breaking into a spot of break-dancing.

Replacement Bulls lock Danie Rossouw gave his team a lift when he powered over with 10 minutes to play, but then the Queenslanders hit back when skipper James Horwill flopped over for a well-deserved try.

But the Bulls had the last laugh when Basson capped off a great performance in a losing side by scoring his second try with less than two minutes remaining.

The scorers:

For Reds:
Tries: Cooper, Samo, Morahan 2, Ioane, Horwill
Cons: Cooper 3
Drop: Cooper

Well of course you lose the argument over the dominance nonsense so it's back to the world cup yet again! Which has nothing to do with the game in Hong Kong

You say "move on and it's in the past" yet you couldn't help bringing up more of your excuses with "cooperman". Sorry but I didn't have enough time to mention them all.

Yes indeed you ought to move on and it's good to see the reds doing well but if or when the reds or Wallabies lose please do not go back to your usual list of poor excuses which you probably have saved on your computer ready to "copy and paste"

Move on, I could go on about winning 2 Rugby world Cups, but that is the past. Present, Reds are on top, and when the Reds are winning so too are the Wallabies.

PS You also forgot Coopermans ban, for two Bledisloe games or 13 V 15 in first Bledisloe game, but that's in the past !!!.

KiwiLad: only mad dogs and poms go out in the Qld sun ! but thanks for the advice.

Oh really! Cut the wind up! I'm sure you're not deluded enough not to realise that dominance is about consistently winning, or maybe you are so just in case let me remind you last year NZ dominated Aus by 3 games to 1 which is why they received the Bledisoe cup.

But hang on! Aus would have won all those games if it wasn't for biased referees, Giteau leaving points on the park, McCaw cheating, injured players, and on and on you whine and rant. Funny to start but it has become tedious.

Never mind 2 or one eyed I doubt if you watch with any.

Justice4all The Australians are becoming like the English... You can not beat them at the game of Rugby, you just score more points than them...

OK, it's like this. Last game (as the saying goes, you are only as good as) Wallabies beat NZ. Therefore in a world with two eyes, Wallabies dominance over NZ is 170 + days. We have the rub on you, which should be very worring for a Kiwi seeing that it is RWC year !!!

@pacrap4brains, actually this may be difficult for your tiny mind, but I will "finish watching" the game several times, this being a classic, probably many times....ask your sister to explain it to you...if she's not too busy running away. You seem to be getting your toga in a twist because I asked whether you were intentionally parodying the poet....some were rather clever, but unintentional, apparently....the story of a thousand monkeys and typwriters comes to mind.

@Trinats, Okay go for it! I just finished watching the game....fantastic rugby from both sides and Cooper was outstanding (time to import a kicker?). The Crusaders look like the only team that can stop the Reds going all the way so May 29th is going to be a cracker.

J 4 A:

Reds beat Crusaders early this year (pre season) and trashed them last season (with King McC and son of god, KiwiLad) And Reds top the super 15. It is the Crusaders than should be worried. Wallabies dominance over SA and NZ is now 170 days +. So correct me if I 'm wrong but these would constitute as bragging rights AFTER the event ? Let me have my time in the sun, it's been a long time for a Reds fan !

Reado15, a simpleton could see that Quade Burg, and Mr Genia had that game on a string.. The Crusaders (NZs finest) admitedly without King Richie and Dan (son of God) Carter out muscled the Bulls, The Reds outwitted, out played in every dept the former Champs..

Fantastic game, worthy of the hangover for any Reds fan..

Just noticed the Reds haven't played any NZ teams yet, the Crusaders haven't been to SA and the Stormers haven't played outside SA yet. The table is still far from sorted.

justice_4_all says...

@Trinats, The Reds are a pleasure to watch, but there is no comparison with the quality of rugby that the Crusaders are producing, so the claims regarding "home ref" and bulls' hunger ring a little hollow in your comparison of Reds vs. Crusaders. So I wondered--why not wait the 6 weeks until they play each other before starting this barrage of bragging about Reds superiority?.......and then the penny dropped, in a flash of clarity, I realised: you are Australian and a Reds fan.....you HAVE to brag before the event because there are so few opportunities to brag after!!! I got it now: Australian-->Brag before, whinge after....now I understand..... :) (I am really hoping that ther are no injuries on either side before May 29....no easy excuses for what should be the match of the season)

reado15 - 6 tries to 3 is pretty comprehensive given that a) the reds had just travelled back from SA and b) the Bulls played there best game of the year (the were horrible last week.

Did the Reds spoil your weekend ? sorry old chap, but get use to it.

The best team in the comp scored an extra couple of tries than the crusaders did and without a home ref. Also against a Bulls team that was more hungry/desperate this week.
