Toulon player Delon Armitage dives in for a try watched by Brock James of Clermont

Winning try: Delon Armitage

Toulon claimed their first Heineken Cup title after beating Clermont 16-15 in a thrilling all-French final in Dublin on Saturday.

Toulon become the third French team to win European club rugby's top prize, following in the footsteps of Toulouse and Brive.

RCT were outscored two tries to one but kept themselves in the game thanks to a disciplined, committed and clinical defensive effort.

In a dazzling array of talent, the opposing starting XVs featured 30 full internationals and the intensity on the pitch and atmosphere on offer to the fans at the Aviva Stadium was fully worthy of a Test match.

There was no shortage of attacking intentions in the first half but two very well-drilled defences ensured scoring chances were few and far between. As a consequence the interval was reached with the scores locked at 3-all.

The second half started with a bang however as two Clermont tries - from Napolioni Nalaga and Brock James - put les Jaunards in the driving seat, but Toulon fought back to take the lead for the first time in the 65th thanks to a try from Delon Armitage.

As they had done for much of the game, Clermont dominated territory and possession in the dying minutes only to see David Skrela charged down as he attempted a match-winning drop goal.

It took just three minutes for Morgan Parra to open the scoring from the kicking tee after Chris Masoe failed to release Gerhard Vosloo in the tackle.

Jonny Wilkinson levelled the scores on the 15-minute mark after Nathan Hines was trapped on the wrong side of ruck and didn't roll away.

Clermont fly-half James came within millimetres of scoring just before the break after chasing down his own kick but touched the ball down on the deadball line and was sent 30 metres back by the TMO.

Clermont would move in front within two minutes of the restart however as Nalaga - the tournament's top try scorer - finish in the corner. It all started with a turnover won by Sitiveni Sivivatu, the ball found it's way to Aurélien Rougerie, who emlinated three defenders to put Nalaga clear. The big Fijian still had plenty of work to do as he turned on the gas, sprinting 20 metres down the touchline to evade the cover defence to dive into the corner.

Parra missed the conversion and Wilkinson pulled three points back after Jamie Cudmore entered a maul from the side to leave the scores at 8-6.

The second Clermont try followed shortly afterward as Rougerie collected James' chip over the top, beat two defenders before offloading back to James, who pinned his ears back and raced home.

Parra's conversion put Clermont clear at 15-9, forcing Toulon to try find an extra gear.

RCT coach Bernard Laporte made a few early substitutions, including adding Frederic Michalak to the mix and the French scrum-half made an immediate impact.

Michalak's clever chip ahead forced James to hang on and Wilkinson could cut the deficit to six points from the ensuing penalty.

Juan Fernandez Lobbe was at the origin of Toulon's first and only try, winning a turnover before finding Armitage in space out wide. The English full-back had a clear path to the line and too much pace for the chasing James.

Wilkinson added the extras to put Toulon in front for the first time with 15 minutes to play.

It was all Clermont in the closing minutes, but Vern Cotter's men failed to keep their composure, coughing up a handful of knock-ons when the game was there for the taking.

Clermont were probably the better team on the day but must now turn their attention to winning the Top 14.

Man of the match: Clermont skipper Aurélien Rougerie was brilliant, creating both his team's tries but we'll go with his opposite number, Mathieu Bastareaud, who crossed the gain-line every time he had the ball and forced two crucial penalties by competing at the breakdown when Clermont were threatening to score.

Moment of the match: Both Clermont tries were outstanding but the turnover won by Juan Fernandez Lobbe to set up Armitage's score changed the course of the game.

Villain of the match: He may have scored the winning try but Delon Armitage made no friends amongst neutral fans with his unsportsmanlike wave to Brock James as he raced to the line. Poor form.

The scorers:

Tries: Nalaga, James
Con: Parra
Pens: Parra

For Toulon:

@crunchfit

i think "dedalus" is our friend's newest personality/account. "Goyo" and "amlin shield" were, by sheer coincidence, both used by "new_j4a" a few days ago

dedalus says...

@crutchfit, Are you after following the Lions Tour? Tis one of yers' few oppos for a smattering of Irish men to win something of like significance, teaming up as they may, with a bit of a shove at selection time, with their rugby betters from halfway up the table. Or do you count the Ammo "Shield" as a significant achievement, like, and aspire with Goyo to win it 3 years in a row, like?

@dedalus

Baseless, vague, obvious again. And the one statement you said with any basis was completely wrong. Good job.

dedalus says...

Nothing more obvious than your answer. Clear for all to see. At least a foot or two above your old noggin. Not the sharpest crayon in the box. Not very funny either. Not a lot in the way of rugby nous even for a Dublin boy. Wonder why you bother?

crunchfit says...

@dedalus

"From my response"? Wow, you really backed away from that one. Even I could have come up with something less vague and obvious than your answer if I were in your position. That's saying something. Ain't it!?!

Going by my maths

Group 1: Leinster, Saints, Edinburgh, Gloucester

Group 2: Toulon, Cardiff, Ospreys, Castres (Toulon

Group 3: Toulouse, Harlequins, Ospreys, Racing Metro

Group 4: Clermont, Saracens, Glasgow, Exeter

Group 5: Munster, Leicester, Montpellier, Treviso

Group 6: Ulster, Perpignan, Monpellier, Zebre

Scarlets are obviously one of your Osprey picks.

Connacht will be there, as Leinster won the Amlin.

As someone else said, the teams are seeded, then there is a draw done.

Why they don't go by this years league positions, seems to be beyond their organisation.

Instead they go by previous performances in the comp, to the stage that it is self perpetuating.

@crunchfit, I deduced the first fact that froggies beautiful circular logic had evaded you from your response and deduced the ease with which you will find someone brighter than you transitively from the first fact. Hope this helps, otherwise apply the same advice: find someone, etc.

@dedalus

How did you arrive at that deduction?

@Rosbif

Sweet.

makemehappy says...

Bizarre that the best team, who played well didn't win. They should have resorted to commiting the same ruck offences as Toulon, as the idiot with the whistle gave yet another poor display, allowing the worse team to win.

hehehe crunchfit, I have learned not to throw stones in that regard, when one comes from a country that has produced gauzere, poite, garces, berdos... (I could go on...)

@crunchfit, froggie's post went way over your head mate. Ask somebody cleverer to explain it to you. (Should be easy to find someone)

@froggy73

Well, I don't really mind if you love me or hate me. This is just a rugby website. Don't be so sensitive ye little baby.

How exactly might I become like "FISH the retard"? Regardless, the nature of my response varies greatly depending on the nature of the post to that I am responding to.

@Rosbif

Impossible? No, not at all, as simple as any other. I mean, two responses have been given to that comment (my original and froggy's slight variation). I don't think most people would find it hard, let alone impossible! And if you had waited a while, you would have seen that it had already been replied to (for the 2nd time essentially).

Glad to see you agree with me on Rolland. I think he's a good ref. Shame we also produced Clancy.

Iyhel says...

@dannyboy: there's a draw; with rules which normally prevents two teams from the same country to be drawn together - then obviously with 7 French teams and 6 pools... But Connacht shouldn't get drawn with another Irish team.

@potemkine: there are not enough French international players to form 14 squads. And if you find and develop local talents, there's always the risk to see them poached by the usual suspects (or mildly put simply seduced by their golden, err, glorious aura). Think Picamoles moving from Montpellier to Toulouse or Fall from Bayonne to Racing. Obviously the equation is much simpler with only 4 provinces to manage, especially if they are directly bound to the national federation... So it's easy to say "look what Toulouse can do! Toulon, bad boys!" but whatever our hopes, the problem is that the T14 is almost to wealthy and healthy for its own good - and the French XV's.

@crunchfit - you successfully managed to make me prefer Leinster_goy over you. That is a good achievement. He is arrogant, but at least he doesn't spite and insult...you do; that is my major issue. Make an effort, you'll soon become like FISH the retard.

Rosbif says...

@new_j4a. Nice to see you getting stuck in... :-)

@froggy73. The reply to crunchfit is indeed perfect and has a nice circular logic to it. It's also impossible to respond to!

@Toulousain. Your post takes the biscuit for me. It starts off like a compliment, but has the element of suspense, because you kinda know something's coming...

@crunchfit. 100% agreed re Rolland. People may not like him (and no referee is universally liked as far as I know) but he is consistent and one of the best. Up to the players to adjust on the field as you say. Toulon did that better than Clermont.

@leinster_goy. Self-awareness about rubbing people up the wrong way..... Watch out, it's a slippery slope, we wouldn't want you to completely lose your edginess after all!!

@lyhel and KiwiRooster - Thanks. Always like reading your posts. Very informative.

@DannyBoy. I too have been thinking how the pools might look next year. You may be broadly right since Biarritz (5th ranked) and Stade Francais (8th ranked) won't be in it. It also highlights the relative underperformance of English clubs in the past few seasons. For anyone who's interested here's the link:

@All. Looking forward to a massive summer for NH rugby (league finals, BaBas, Lions, Fra vs NZ, the lot). Good luck everyone.

ALLEZ!!!!!

@Terry_English

The refereeing at the breakdown is never completely accurate. You'd have a penalty at almost every single ruck. Penalties not being awarded for not supporting your bodyweight are common. What I saw was that Rolland was consistant and very accurate, but he wasn't penalising at every single opportunity. Nobody does that.

The only reason he may have contributed to their loss is by penalising their "pile-in" rucking technique, but the move is illegal and Rolland does penalise it. They should have adjusted.

Clermont were just outplayed.

@leinster_goy

I enjoy all your posts, Leave him at it.

@froggy73

I was expecting your usually logical, feisty response. I guess you couldn't come up with one this time. Ye little baby!

Posted 14:04 19th May 2013

Dougie says...

Good idea choky. They should really get rid of kicking at all. If you get a penalty inside the opposition's half it should be three automatic points.

Posted 13:39 19th May 2013

potemkine says...

@KiwiRooster

I would tend to agree with everything you say, however when I see 12 french players in the Toulouse starting XV vs the Racing Métro, I think there's still hope for the french players to emerge at the top level... the trend started by the RCT is nonetheless worrying.

@crunchfit

it's mildly amusing that the multiple-personality troll thinks we are the same person (he's obviously getting paranoid now that his elaborate masquerade has been exposed) and i suspect that's the reason you've been constantly trying to distance yourself from me in the last few weeks? i guess you and i passed the point of no return a while ago (which is a pity, since i often enjoy reading your posts) but i'm afraid i can't change my style and opinions, in the same way a tiger can't change its stripes. if that rubs people up the wrong way, then so be it (although admit it you did enjoy reading my response to j_hdk didn't you)
