Aaron Cruden

Flawless kicking: Aaron Cruden

The Chiefs were made to work for their 22-21 win over the Force, with ill-discipline costing the visitors in Pukekohe.

Despite the Force giving a good enough account of themselves in the first half and showing some towering defence in the second half, the Chiefs were allowed to keep the scoreboard ticking over almost every time they got into the Force 22 in the opening period as a consistent string of infringements gave Aaron Cruden easy three-point opportunities.

After a scrappy start to the game in which both teams exchanged rather aimless kicks, the Force opened the scoring courtesy of a try from Pat Dellit in just the third minute. With a poor pass from Sias Ebersohn grubbered towards the sideline, Dellit ran onto the ball and booted it down the touchline before out-pacing the Chiefs defence to dive over for the score.

It was the last of the scoring the Force would contribute for some time as the Chiefs proceeded to run in 16 unanswered points.

A Cruden penalty got the hosts on the board before Lelia Masaga picked up the Chiefs first five-pointer. The winger rounded off an impressive period of play in which the defending champions worked the ball through eight phases of pick and goes before spreading it wide for Masaga to cross over.

Cruden kept his side moving in the right direction with three further penalties, two of which were cancelled out by the boot of Jayden Hayward to see the Chiefs take a 19-11 lead into the break.

The Chiefs number ten extended the lead by three more points but the Force began to show more of an attacking edge after warming up in the second half.

They were rewarded for their efforts first with a Hayward penalty and then a second try, with Dellit again the man crossing the whitewash. Nick Cummins was the man to provide the required spark, breaking through the midfield and into the 22 before the ball was worked out wide to his fellow winger to make it a one-point ball game.

The try saw Chiefs coach Dave Rennie ring the changes and the replacements had the desired effect with the hosts putting down the gas and taking charge of proceedings.

For the final quarter it was all the hosts but as the Reds found out last week, the Perth outfit's defence is tough to breach, with attack after attack repelled.

Despite being reduced to 14 men after Kieran Longbottom was sent to the sin bin following three scrum-related penalties five metres out from the line, the Force would not budge.

With the Chiefs advantage remaining just one point, there was always the danger that the visitors would sneak a late score to steal the spoils and Ebershon had a shot at goal from 55 metres out with just two minutes on the clock but he was well short with the effort.

The Chiefs were able to hang on to see out the victory, with the Force's mammoth defence not enough to grab a surprise win.

Always a excuse aye. Sorry but they just don't stand up. As has been pointed out that it could be said the Reds and other Aussies teams have had their fair share of help from the ref

Yes the Waratahs shouldn't be written of

"Crusaders beat your Reds 11 games in a row"

Cost me a lot of grog !!! 10 of those were directly a result of referee Andera Watson, OK maybe 9 !!! Or we were rebuilding ! Still rebuilding, our change sheds still not ready after the floods !

As a Queenslander it hurts to say, I wouldn't write off the Tahs, they are getting better (and confidence) each week !

Got to laugh at that fair due:) Only you could come up with that! Ridiculous to the end HaHa

But the previous 3 victories by the reds were all home games for the reds and we could also say they were very lucky and had help from the ref in the two of the games that the reds scraped through in same year when the crusaders were exhausted from all the travel with no proper home due to the earthquake and blah blah excuse! excuse!

But how about before that where the Crusaders beat your Reds 11 games in a row!! Now that is a really big fat cherry to pick wasn't it and it will stay ripe for a long time

Seriously lets put aside the silly talk and what matters now is this year and as I said I would give your Reds and the Brumbies a good chance The Crusaders still possible The Blues a fair chance, The Chiefs just maybe and from SA the Bulls definitley in with a very good chance

It is all very open which is good for the Championship

I'm oozing with confidence.

Reds beat the Crusaders in NZ last time they played, just the ref didn't see it that way. And as my best mate (a kiwi from CHC now living here !) said Crusaders were very lucky to get away with it.

Do you really have so little confidence that you have to continue with this silly blagging to try and score points.

You done the same last year then it all went wrong didn't it.

I think your Reds are in with a chance this year of the title and wouldn't begrudge them if they won it.

However you just have to keep blagging on as to pretend the Reds are the best ever just in case they don't win. Quite pathetic really

If you want to keep cherry picking then how about telling us how long ago was it when the reds last beat the crusaders in NZ

I see you have been caught out telling untruths YET AGAIN on another article

It's very simple, really it is, try not to over complicate it. Everyone plays the same amount of games at wash up. Although kiwis may introduce a new rule that they can play more games than anyone else !!!

Chiefs and Brumbies have played 11 games each, Brumbies are top of the table. Reds have played one more game than the Chiefs, 12 games. Chiefs have to play the Blues in that extra game and could lose, never mind whoever else they play in next few rounds. Either way Reds will be in the final and no matter what kiwi side is in there Reds will be feeling very confident with their 11 wins in last 12 games over kiwi opposition.

Trinads - too difficult a concept for you to grasp I know as others have tried before;

remove the false byes you will find Chiefs and reds are top of table on 40 earned points, reds have played one more game, and as Chiefs have scored 92 more points and have a 57 point higher differential they are #1.

Look ahead to round 17 - no NZ/SA, then to rounds 18 and 19 when no Australian teams play. And the Australian sides are not given bye points for those rounds either, balancing the artificial lead they have held since round one when no NZ or SA teams played.

Only in your dreams

The Kiwi teams would love to pay the Aussie teams twice especially your Reds and without the help of the ref this time LOL!

Reds scraped past the highlanders had big help from the ref against the Hurricanes

Couldn;t beat the Force out of 2 attempts. Couldn't beat the Brumbies out of 2 attempts and thrashed in the first game. Yes the Brumbies who were easily beaten by the Crusaders. Lucky you're not playing the Crusaders once this year never mind twice

Best season ever for the Aussies yet still only 2 teams in the top 6.

NZ playing their worst rugby in years and have 3 teams in the 6.

Goes to show the quality of Super rugby at the moment, not great.

Reds top of NZ conf ! If only they could play weak kiwi teams each week and not Aussie teams, they would be top overall !!!

Q: Who was the SR team that lost and then drew with the Force in 2013 (ie could not beat the Force even by one point)?

A: The Reds

trinats - boring as ever

forgotten the Reds recent losses and draws already? This has to be the closest comp in years, and with four NZ teams in Top 8 right now, real competition for the wildcards. Meanwhile, in he bottom 7, the strongest conference has another stranglehold on the also-rans. Waratahs Rebels Force, looks just like last year!,

If someone passes the ball to you and you catch it in front of them then it is forward. The hands facing backwards is a mickey mous interpretation. Yet another forward pass try. Let me guess the 07 quarter final pass left the hands backwards so it was a legit try as well! Can we get back to common sense please. Anyway the chiefs are still winning which is the main thing and like some teams have injury problems. Id like to think they are doing what the old crusaders teams did and find a way to win and then peak at the right time of the season, however not sure if they have the personnel this year to go all the way. Nice to see messam tell the ref he dropped it forward.
