Hosea Gear try Scotland v NZ 2010

All Blacks: Hit top Gear

New Zealand ran in seven tries past Scotland to beat their hosts 49-3 in a completely one-sided game at Murrayfield on Saturday.

It was a demoralising defeat for the Scots, who could only look on helplessly as the All Blacks condemned their hosts to a record home defeat.

The visitors' back division proved altogether too hot to handle as Hosea Gear and Mils Muliaina each claimed a brace during the visitors' success, which saw the Kiwis back on top after rather disappointing performances in the last two weeks.

The match was over as a contest as early as the 17th minute following four early tries to New Zealand who took control from kick-off and never looked back.

If anything, New Zealand's dominance of territory and possession increased in the second half and they added three further tries - through Muliaina, Conrad Smith and Andy Ellis - to cap a dazzling display.

Dan Parks slotted a third-minute penalty from long-range to give Scotland the opening points. But the Murrayfield faithful's hopes of witnessing their country's first win over the All Blacks in 105 years of trying were soon dashed as the tourists raced into a 25-point lead by half-time.

Gear opened the floodgates in the ninth minute, crossing under the posts after Sonny Bill Williams had straightened the angle of attack and found the winger out of the back of his hand. Dan Carter converted and was soon crossing the whitewash himself as turnover ball was ruthlessly exploited close to the half-way line.

With Scotland's defence out of position, full-back Muliaina and wing Isaia Toeava combined down the left flank to give Carter a free run to the line.

The fly-half then turned provider, his inside pass releasing Muliaina and Gear took advantage of a mismatch with Scotland hooker Ross Ford to add his second in the 27th minute. Carter slotted the extra two points to put his side 28-3 up and, at that stage, they had scored a point-per-minute.

Scotland suffered a further blow just before the interval when skipper Mike Blair was forced off by injury and Greig Laidlaw came on for his first cap.

New Zealand continued to dominate after the break and it was no surprise when another Williams offload allowed Muliaina to squeeze over in the right corner in the 48th minute for his second try - and his team's fifth. Carter's conversion took his personal tally to 15 points but was also his final act as Stephen Donald was brought on for the final half-hour.

It took until the 66th minute for New Zealand to create their sixth try, Smith applied the final touches after Scotland's overworked defence was outnumbered on the left.

Replacement scrum-half Ellis added a seventh late on before the match finished amid worrying scenes as Scotland centre Max Evans, whose brother Thom was forced to retire after breaking his neck in last year's Six Nations encounter with Wales, was stretchered off with his neck in a brace.

Graham Henry's side are now halfway through their November tour as they seek a third Grand Slam in five years, following the successes in 2005 and 2008, and meet Ireland in Dublin next weekend.

Man of the match: Hard one after such an accomplished team effort. But it was the distribution of rugby league convert Sonny Bill Williams in midfield that particularly caught the eye. Williams, who made his Test debut in the 15-man code in last weekend's win over England at Twickenham, consistently opened holes in Scotland's defence with the timing and vision of his offloads.

Moment of the match: Take your pick out of the seven tries scored... all had their own bit of All Blacks' class to it.

Villain of the match: Nothing to report.

@Brett

Mate, I don't think the All Blacks got away with the Mealamu case. He got a two-week suspension, which seemed appropriate. You can't say a headbutt is a headbutt is a headbutt -- every case is different and that should be acknowledged.

I think the All Blacks management might have accepted the original sentence had it not been for the crass hypocrisy and inconsistency of the three Englishmen who hit McCaw, Mathewson and Toeava not even having to go before the judiciary.

Where do you get the idea that officialdom has been favouring the ABs these past couple of years?

Ben7, only Scotland? And what was England's last result against Scotland? And against New Zealand?

Jmanngod has a point about the scrums. Whatever happens, the British press ascribe supremacy there to their team. I remember thinking, as Reid scored from a scrum at Twickenham last Saturday, the English will think they won that scrum, and yet the All Blacks got exactly the platform they wanted from it.

Referee Poite gave the All Blacks a pasting in the scrums at Twickenham; he penalised them even when England were backpeddalling or going up in the front row. (And to a man the British press said how well Poite controlled the scrums.)

But the All Blacks, despite the odd victory for the Scots, definitely had ascendancy in the scrums at Murrayfield. Now Ben7, what do you attribute that too? Poor Scottish scrum? Improved All Blacks performance? Different ref?

i gotta say, despite the scots awful defence, i loved watching this game. seeing SBW and hosea gear take their chances was fantastic, and hopefully henry and co. see fit to keep them in the fold for the world cup and beyond. the talent in NZ is astounding, especially considering he hasnt even had to call up robbie fruean yet, and there are still world class players in NZ that they havent had to use. kudos to the ABs for being so dominant

Brett says...

@Hemip I think youve got it wrong mate. My opinion is that abroad the ABs have always been loved and the majority of times everyones second favourite side.

I feel theyve earned this privilige and deserve it!

Where I feel its gone wrong is the last couple of years with the lopsided officiating they dont need any extra help, most of the time they have the beating of any side put in front of them.

But the ABs are not to blamed for the officiating albeit they have lately been playing a very fine percentage based game unfortunately they chose to anger everyone with the sheer arrogance showed in the Mealamu incident and then to boot they get away with it!!!

The straw that broke the camels back!

Yeah feel sorry for the Scots hampered by the particularly useless Andy Robinson. I remember well the frustrating "Andy" years that England had to endure.

@justice_4_all perhaps kiwikev meant if you're not goin to back up your talk then dont say anything at all.. Scotland did well. they tried and it was awesome. AB's played their second string team a few top players missing through injury, and they still did well.. AB's are quiet and humble until the one eyed judiciary goes and wastes everyones time by not being fair.. No one outside of NZ likes the All Blacks.. and NZ is finally figuring that out... so a big LOL to those less than humble outsiders.. we'll give it back in return.. Rugby wins in the end!

Kiwikev,

Yeah, that was a bit much, mate. No need for that.

The Scots are a decent bunch, gracious in defeat. With a scoreline like that, certain others would have been scrapping by the end, or mighty petulant. The Scots were well beaten, but they showed a lot of class. And they were there to play some good football, if only allowed to. Give them some credit.

But in mitigation, justice_4_all, perhaps kiwikev just grew tired of all the unwarranted bluster one finds in blogs such as these. He may not have recognised the difference between the Scots and some of their neighbours.

Was that the same Scotland team that drew with England this year ?

Kiwi's back to business as usual. (including the one's in the English team !)

rangdaddy says...

@justice 4 all - mate, you are a funny bugger. Glad the Scots got smashed, its always the same dribble from NH nations stating, 'we are going to beat the AB's, we have their measure' - what a load of garbage. Apart from the French, no other NH nation can truly say they can 'beat' the AB's consistently - look at the Poms, they crow after they win every 8-10 years (Joke!). Hopefully the Irish will prove harder, but I'm guessing they will be just like the Poms and hope for a 'win' in one half of the game and come out saying 'we can match them'. AB's all class, NH teams poor pretenders! haha!

Lets put this into perspective, The Abs, after a couple of poor performances, finaly clicked..And played to the same standard we saw in the first 3 3N matches..... Sadly for Scotland it was againt them, There 1st game out this season and they looked rusty... A similar performance from the ABs blew both Africa and the Shackle Draggers off the park.... Give the Scots a game or two and they willbe back to the same standard that saw them beat the Argie Bargies at home and the Irish last year

stuckinthemud says...

@ jmanngod, just what game were you watching? The AB scrum was PUMPED today, Franks couldn't take the pressure and even Woody was getting the odd lesson at scrum time! And as for last week, well they got pumped there too.... actually in HK I don't even think they had the upper hand against Australia!

A lot of work to do over the next 10 months if they wanna keep the Webb Ellis Cup in the land of the long white cloud!

That said Backs looked sharp again SBW coming good already... but Mils can stop doing the kicking thing, he's a great player but he has never been there to do the kicking, as we've all seen now in the last 3 weeks!

Ben7 says...

Jmanngod must be one of the NZ commentators coz he's also a biased douche. Haha yeah you really "dominated" the scrums last weak didn't you! What was it, 5 penalties to England at scrum time.

It's only scotland! They lose to Italy all the time.

AB's are a class act and set the bench mark for international rugby...that is untill we can get a half decent administative team (coach included) to do with my beloved Springboks what our counterparts in NZ manage to do with the AB's year in and year out (RWC's excluded). Maybe bring back Jake White? Look what John Mitchell and John Plumtree have done with 2 previously lacking provincial sides an SA, the Sharks and the Lions. We have so much talent in SA and while we are sorting our 'politics' out, can someone (Wales?) please knock the Kiwis off there high horse...anyone?

Go Bokke!!!RWC 2011 Champs!!!

Hosea Gear has the class thats been missing from Rokocoko for the last 2 seasons. Along with S Donald I think it's time for Joe to put family first and start looking overseas. Gear / Jane / Mils as a back three - bring it on. And SWB just gets better every game. Hopefully R Fruean has a good super 15 next year - I reckon he is another off the bench trump card for the world cup.

reado15 says...

Well done, a pretty clinical display from the AB's for 50 mins until the entire bench got rotated at the same time! While i am happy with the win as an AB's supporter,

I thought the Scottish forward pack played particularly well and to be honest they played better than the scoreline details. (Especially that fat bugger who is one of the props - how good a runner is he!)

They will however be pretty peeved with their back line who couldn't knock the skin off a rice pudding to save themselves. They looked flat, indecisive, played with way too much width without committing defenders and never looked like scoring.

Back to the drawing board me thinks.

justice_4_all says...

@kiwikev... magnanimous in victory as usual? What did you want them to do all week...run around saying "We're nowhere near as good as the ABs,....we're going to lose by 50 points?" Why did you bother to watch? Ahhh, let me guess...because you're a bit of baboon, and need something to jeer at between picking lice off your butt.
