Chris Ashton celeb England v Australia 2010

Star man: Chris Ashton

England finally put in the performance Martin Johnson had been longing for on Saturday with a ruthless 35-18 win against Australia at Twickenham.

It was an 80-minute effort that saw Lewis Moody lift the Cook Cup and the champagne sprayed. The victory - inspired by two tries from wing Chris Ashton and 25 points via the assured boot of Toby Flood - has also sent out a warning shot to rivals ahead of next year's World Cup.

Moody had come out of the dressing rooms in a manner that summed up his 'Mad Dog' nickname - smiling yet scowling in a fired up fashion. And it seemed that the captain's late pep talk before kick-off rubbed off on his team-mates, who took the fight to the Wallabies in the early stages.

England unsurprisingly had set about looking to take the heart out of their opponents, attacking Australia down the middle of the field through Courtney Lawes and Nick Easter. However, the visitors weathered the early storm and were in fact the first to have an opportunity for posts. Wing James O'Connor missed from the touchline though in what was a bad day from the tee in which he was unsuccessful with his first three.

The hosts soon capitalised in what quickly became the enterprising brand that Martin Johnson has been desperate for for some time now. England were running the ball from all areas, had options and were backing themselves to claim successive wins against Oz.

It paid off too as a Shontayne Hape crash ball led to the impressive Mark Cueto carrying on the move before Tom Croft's offload found Ashton, who showed strength to cross close to the posts. The score was 10-0 on 25 minutes with England enjoying all of the possession.

However, it probably should have been 10-9 after Force youngster hit the post with his third penalty attempt just after the half-hour. Matters then got worse for Australia when England again showed their counter-attacking ability in a move that was started by the in-form Ben Youngs. The number nine spotted something from his own 22 and the hosts ultimately motored downfield before centre Matt Giteau was blown for lying on the ball.

Flood accepted the three-point attempt, which he landed and then cancelled out O'Connor's second penalty shortly after the restart before Australia mounted their first real assault.

But when Will Genia darted himself he was swallowed up by a combination of Flood, Mike Tindall and Tom Palmer, England snatched the turnover and scored one of the great tries.

Youngs spotted the opening and sent Lawes away down the blindside. The lock then slipped the pass to Ashton who roared clear to score from 85 metres and send HQ wild.

Ashton still had to beat Drew Mitchell but he stepped inside and out-stripped the Wallaby winger to score under the posts, leaving Flood a simple conversion, and England led 26-6.

Australia found a toe-hold in the game when Kurtley Beale scored a brilliant individual try, breaking England's line and then chipping over Ben Foden before touching down.

It did nothing to dampen England's confidence. Cueto surged through two tackles straight from the restart and when Nathan Sharpe was penalised for holding on Flood slotted another penalty.

Australia struck again when Dylan Hartley missed his jumpers on halfway and Luke Burgess snatched possession and raced clear before off-loading to prop James Slipper.

Moody hauled the replacement prop down but Australia recycled the ball quickly and Beale crashed over.

But still England tore into the Wallabies, with Cueto scything through their defence, and Flood sealed a famous victory with two more penalties.

Man-of-the-match: A tough call between Ben Youngs and Chris Ashton. The former was so often the catalyst for England while Toby Flood and Courtney Lawes also put in good shifts, but Ashton's two tries see him take this one.

Moment-of-the-match: It has to be Chris Ashton's memorable try that left Wallaby winger Drew Mitchell tasting dirt. One of the great tries to ever be scored at Twickenham and it left Australia having it all to do.

Villain-of-the-match: Slightly harsh to dish this award out so we have decided to share it out with the charcoal shirt subplot, James O'Connor missing those early kicks and Matt Giteau for getting yellow carded.

The scorers:

For England:
Tries: Ashton 2
Con: Flood 2
Pen: Flood 7

For Australia:

Con: O'Connor
Pen: O'Connor 2

I know its only one game but wouldnt it be wonderful if all NH teams follow Englands lead and adopt a philosophy of running rugby, endorsed by the IRB and British scribes and commentators. My dreams would become even wetter should kicks for goal be reduced to encourage tries...53 points and only 4 tries!!!

well played Pommies...the makings of a top side if you can move the ball around to the same degree but forward at pace. It appeared more like a touch footy game at times and just one of those games where just about every pass stuck. I suspect however that the match wouldn't have been to the liking of many british commentators as it wasn't played like a 'real' test match...too much like SH rugby.

Still, Australia will be world beaters if they can ditch Elsom, Giteau, McCalnum, Mumm, Brown and the entire front row...

Agree with the comments about Quade Cooper HORGAA...fear not, he will run himself off the face of the earth when he sees Sonny Bill running straight at him next year! The ABs will not have forgetten the cheap shot on their captain either...

I think Cooper needs to train with the Australian womans rugby team. They put on some big hits in the womans world cup. Maybe they can show Cooper how to tackle

well well. 1) obstruction by tom croft in the play leading to englands 1st try. a yellow card should have been given. 2) lying on top of wallaby number 9 in the turnover that led to england's 2nd try. another yellow card missing. 3) obstruction by Tindall in mark cueto's great run (if you obstruct no wonder space just apppears), which led to a penalty and 3 points for england. another yellow card that was not shown. 4) countless occasions of england doing american football style of rucking players on the fringes of rucks without the ball in sight (another word for obstruction). england was stronger, ok. but the ref was a disgrace. dont expect it to happen many times. at least lets hope not.

So glad England have finally realised what it takes to win test matches. Yes, one swallow does not make a summer, but there is more and more of these swallows and if we beat Samoa and the Springboks we could be in for a shout next year.

Just wanted to show my appreciation by making a vid on youtube, go on my user rvdrocks to see it :)

I agree with the Cooper comments...arrogant without the tackling skills to back it up. He reminds me of Carlose Spencer, but not quite as talented.

Anyone see him trying to tackle McCaw in HK and getting the big fend off?! Hahaha!! McCaw almost went on to score...and would have if it wasnt for that punk Beale.

Anyway, back to the topic, I wouldnt of picked this scoreline, Well done England, going to be a cracker against SA now...would have picked SA by 10 before the weekend, not so sure now....

Interesting the comments on here re Quade Cooper

He seems to be being compared to Carlos Spencer a lot, However Carlos could Tackle, was not a burglar, and managed to keep a lid on his arrogance.

Quade will learn in time, I suspect, that it is rather dark at the bottom of a ruck....

Lets not get too excited! A pleasing performance for England over a tired Wallabies side after a long season. A great rugby team can play consistently week after week and string together test match wins. Will be interesting to see if England can back this one up against the Boks -not looking forward to the one eyed commentary from the English though. It really is terrible!

Re Quade Cooper- How many tackles did he miss? Truckloads!. A real concern for the Wallabies.

Would love to take the mike out of Trinats and the Aussies but England are going to hammer the Boks next week and I would get it back with interest! Mebbe they rise to the occasion should be a cracker. Cant wait to see a full strength bok squad out, very difficult to tell exactly how little our chances are of a third WC win.

@reado15

"Especially for Greg Martin - possibly the most ridiculous and one eyed commentator in world sport."

No arguments there, but he certainly does have some competition from the English commentators. It was an unbearable love fest as they steamed up the commentary box.

Made all the more painful by an English side totally outplaying the wallabies.

I'm originally english but now live in Australia. I thought that this game would be close and that Australia would get up. Unfortunately for them the english side played very well and did not allow Australia much ball especially in the first half. When the Aussie got the ball for most of the game they either kicked it back to the english or played the easy to defend against one out from the ruck rugby that they played at the start of the year. When they did this the english found it really easy to defend as did the All Blacks at the start of the year. The rugby that has won them games this year or when they pushed the All Blacks close in Sydney they played very good rugby which is what England played today (took the Wallabies by surprise). When the Wallabies did play this rugby then they looked a lot more dangerous and scored two tries. England were fantastic and both teams will do very well next year at the World Cup.

Saturday, 3 hours before kickoff for the Eng v Aus and Bok v Wales game I posted a thread in a SA rugby forum about my concern about England being our worst problem on tour.

How right I was, fact is, by the time we reach England we should have 3 wins under our belt which means the following:

1. England will have claimed the scalp of Australia (as I hinted in the post) so a lot of confidence drawn from that + they will have played two really tough games prior to us.

2. They will surely want some revenge on the 2008 42-6 defeat suffered at Twickenham.

3. England will be out to prevent us from reaching our first Grand Slam in 50 years.

Didn't watch the England game as I was at the pub watching the Boks, but the scoreline says it all. Well done England!

Trinats, at lest you can admit it when you a wrong! Good onya mate! Chin up, who knows what the next game might bring!?

@Horgaa, couldn't agree more about cooper with his cheap shots and rubbing the heads of opposition players! He hasn't got any class!

A great win against a top side. M Johnson will be happier but was quick to point out that there is still a lot of room to improve.

Had O'Connor hit the target with his first 3 attempts England could easily and undeservedly been 10 -12 down and in a different game.

So let's take the credit for a great performance, build on the many positives and work to eliminate the few but dangerous negatives.

By doing that there is no reason why England can not regain the coveted no. 1 position in world rugby.
