Danny Williams Newcastle try

Danny Williams on his way to a try for Newcastle

Leeds and Newcastle both notched bonus point wins in the Amlin Challenge Cup on Sunday, Leeds beating Parma and Newcastle beating Albi.

Leeds 37 Parma 13

Five tries for Leeds, who go second in Pool One as a result. Scott Barrow opened the scoring for the home side, who struggled to break free of a spirited display by the Italians for a while.

Jason Strange kicked two penalties, as did Parma counterpart Barry Irving, and Roberto Mariani's try for Parma meant the teams were close.

But Calum Clark's try settled the home side and there was a double from wing Richard Welding and one from prop Gareth Hardy as Leeds pulled clear.

Newcastle 45 Albi 3

Newcastle rarely broke sweat in a dismantling of Albi and are now very much in charge of Pool Five ahead of the crunch back-to-back matches against Montauban in December.

They ran in seven tries, through Laurence Ovens, Tom Biggs, Charlie Amesbury, Alex Walker, Danny Williams, Will Welch and Jimmy Gopperth, who also weighed in with five conversions.

Albi's lone response was an early penalty from Frédéric Manca.

McCaw? Give us a break!

We feared this would happen. Like clockwork, the IRB pulls a rabbit from the hat by naming Richie McCaw as Player of the Year. Say what?
