Stormers resist Blues comeback

16th March 2012 15:34

Stormers wing Bryan Habana v Blues 2012

Man of the Match: Bryan Habana

The Stormers continued their unbeaten start to the Super Rugby season with a convincing 27-17 win over the Blues at Newlands on Friday.

The result provisionally takes the side from Cape Town to the top of the overall standings and ensures they will finish the weekend leading the South African conference.

After an error-ridden performance, the Blues are left rooted to the bottom of the New Zealand conference with just a solitary win from their four games.

The teams scored two tries each, but five penalties from home full-back Joe Pietersen proved the difference as the Stormers claimed a thoroughly deserved four tournament points.

The hosts ruled at scrum time and never really looked like losing despite a slight wobble around the hour mark when their lead was cut from 21 to just 7 points in a space of eight minutes.

Already depleted at kick-off by the absence of a number of injured first-choice players, the Blues were given further reason to worry as captain Kevin Mealamu was forced off early in the second half after taking a knock to the knee.

The visitors looked nothing like the side that upset the Bulls last weekend, lacking continuity in their set-piece and showing poor discipline to give the Stormers the ascendancy from the opening minutes.

A dominant first half from the Stormers saw the hosts take a 17-3 lead into the break thanks to a try from Bryan Habana and handful of penalties from Joe Pietersen.

An equally dominant start to the second period saw the Stormers extend the lead to 24-3 as Jean De Villiers also crossed the whitewash.

But the Blues launched a gallant comeback as Benson Stanley and Charlie Faumuina scored with minutes of each other to drag the visitors back into the game.

A late Pietersen penalty was however enough to seal victory over the depleted Blues.

@ Kiwilad

Apart from the unnecessary and unwanted side description from justice, that is the true explanation.

One more piece of advice. We don't mind being called Rooinek, never refer to an Afrikaner as a rock spider. I would never do it, even with my dearest friend.

Afrikaners in the Eastern Cape are the kindest, the more family oriented, relaxed and enjoyable people I know.

horribly refereed game. blues very unlucky. why the ref wasnt neutral is just bizarre. maybe he was too conscious not to favour the blues so he ended up favouring the stormers.

@justice, that was epic

If I had to think that every Cheetah player hat left was a traitor, to the Bulls among others, I would need to be institutionalised........ Unless, BullsBaby, this is a devious way of infiltrating those mountain goats and actually annexing the Cape and making it part of a new, enlightened state where everyone wears blue and has 2 horns!!! It must be a conspiracy, you think??

BullsBaby, as long as your fans don't bottle him. Bulls fans seems to forget themselves sometimes and marginalise the difference between pitch and stand...

@KiwiLad well said, the bulls supporters are not only well known for their fierce support but also their utter lack of respect for the refs and other teams and occasional tendancy to take things too far... got to say though woop woop habanna, you go old guy...he's been reborn at the stormers, let us all hope that he continues to remind us why he was one of the best boks of recent years...

@BullsBaby, I'm sure the Lions supporters felt the same way when the Bulls took him.Rugby is a professional sport, would you not take a higher salary from another employer?

@BullsBaby, you do know that Rugby is a game and not a war, correct. This is 2012 not 1960 mate

zambokke says...

philipjfry, I agree with you. I think that your players learn those angles and skills from an early age playing touch rugby and sevens. Bullsbaby - I can't wait for the Stormers to give the Bulls a snotklap just because of your attitude towards Habana.

Posted 20:40 16th March 2012

KiwiLad says...

BullsBaby, perhaps Habana left the Bulls to get away from the redneck attitude you have shown with your post???

Posted 20:13 16th March 2012

philipjfry says...

Classy try scored by Benson Stanley; running that kind of angle doesn't seem natural for South African players, but Kiwis and Aussies often get it right. Wonder why...

Cant wait for the bulls to klap the stormers and spit on habanas traitor shirt.
