We got out of jail - Gatland

Warren Gatland: Happy to take the result

Wales boss Warren Gatland admits his troops were a tad lucky to leave Dublin with a win on Sunday, having beaten Ireland 23-21.

A last-minute penalty from full-back Leigh Halfpenny snatched a win for the Welsh who were without Bradley Davies for ten crucial second-half minutes after he was yellow-carded for a dangerous tackle.

Ireland had their fair share of possession but were unable to translate it into points, a fact that Gatland is well aware could have been very different on another day.

"We were reasonably lucky. I thought we were only at about 70% today. But to come here and be under pressure and to come back with 14 men shows great character," said Gatland.

"The displeasing thing was a bit of a lack of discipline with the yellow card. We got out of jail, but we've won our first game of the tournament away from home. We were down at half-time in the World Cup against Samoa, but we kept our patience and finished on top of them. That is what Test match rugby is all about - taking your opportunities.

"We have been unlucky in the past a few times in the last minute, so we will take that any day."

Gatland reserved particular praise for winger George North who enjoyed a great day out.

"George North was absolutely world class, particularly when he bumped off Fergus McFadden and passed out of the back for Jonathan Davies to score. It just shows what potential he does have," said the Kiwi.

Wales may be without Davies for their next encounter with the lock facing the possibility of a citing for his tackle on Donacha Ryan.

"We've got to plan, potentially, for him being cited," explained Gatland.

"I've seen a replay, and I won't deny it wasn't fantastic. Potentially, we have got to prepare for the worst.

"There was definite intent there and I wouldn't have argued with the decision if it had been a red card. With the one in the World Cup there wasn't intent and that was the difference in the interpretation of the law," he added.

Skipper Sam Warburton may also be a doubt for the game after he failed to return for the second forty after taking a blow to the leg. Looking from the sidelines - as he did during Wales' World Cup semi-final against France - Warburton admits he found it hard to watch at times.

"I suffered a dead leg after 10 or 15 minutes and then I took another knock just before half-time. I will get it iced and treated then the medics will make a call in the 24 hours," said the flanker.

"I couldn't watch for parts of the game - it was unbelievable. Those sorts of games don't happen very often.

"It reminded me of the semi-final in the World Cup, sitting there and knowing you can't do anything - it was agonising. I thought we were very smart in the second half even with a player down and our big boys ran hard and that made a massive difference.

"Being at the same club as Leigh I see him after training spending ages on the pitch banging them over all day long. It's a bit different when you have 50,000 Irishmen against you.

"He deserves that because he was gutted about the World Cup semi-final miss and he is chuffed with that kick. He did fantastically well."

Warren, just to put you right. You were behind at half time against Samoa in the rwc, but then samoa, who had played two matches in four days, compared to the 7 day break wales were given, tired, allowing wales to sneak the win.

So was it patience that got you that win or an unfair fixture list that favoured the establised rugby sides. Go on, be honest with yourself, I dare you.

@ Cats_Meow - here's what I posted on a different thread in reply to another idiot who can't find their tv remote:

"... - then don't watch or comment. Some Bok supporters are so insular that they think their rugby is the only rugby worth watching. Fine. Just go away and do that.

For the rest of us, let us enjoy all of the different competitions, tournaments and cups available and the different teams, players and styles they offer.

Vive la difference!"

I appreciate that you may not be a Bok fan (although you do seem to behave like one of their worst), but the principle remains: if you don't like it, don't watch it.

Cats_Meow. Nobody made you watch. And nobody cares what you think. Stick with your S15 rugby-lite.

Gatland doesn't pay himself and his team enough credit, their Achilles heel at the world cup was their inability to kick pressure goals, this time they did and they got the points. Congrats Wales

Perhaps Wales where a tad lucky but they know how to stifel Ireland and grind the win i feel .Stop the irish pack you stop Ireland its that simply really.Despite the talant they have in the backline .Ireland have no one who can give the backline go forward by himself unlike Robers for Wales or Rougarie for France or Manu for NZ ect and hopefully Tulangi for England in the near future

yep fair play wales ! a good win , deserved for the first half performance alone ! Ireland could probably do with a change of scenery at the top, and this time out i'd be vioting for a non national with limited (no) ties to any of the provinces... Its distressing to see however that Irand appear to be the only team world wide that get worse when they come together as a unit !

Yes a great rugby game,a credit to both sides and a treat after Saturdays rubbish. George North is the best teenage player I`ve seen and I`ve been watching since 52. What a prospect

It was not luck that won Wales this game, they never believed for one second that they couldn't win it, that was the difference...

Ireland froze in that last 5 minutes. Letting Wales march forward about 50 meters from their own 22, because they were are too scared to try to win the collision was bad enough, but then Ferris throws in a dumb illegal tackle in front of the posts!(Not a yellow card - someone needs to remind the refs what yellow cards are for. Yellow cards for fouls is the cause of this problem. Stop copping out!) They should have gone all out to disrupt wales in the welsh own 22 and if they gave away a penalty then fine, the welsh lineout was 50-50 all afternoon. Ireland ought to have been welcoming a chance to spoil the welsh throw and end the game.

Fair play Wales, the better team and would have been unlucky to lose. Ireland are rudderless and it's not all down to O'Driscoll being out. We need a coach and a system that will replicate the provincial success at national level. Kidney's had his chance and aside from winning the Grand Slam with O'Sullivan's team, has done very little.

What a match and such a contrast to Saturday's Murrayfield dirge. Credit to both sides. Still think that the championship is wide open.
